As well as be known as a successful company, Sanrio also is seen as an ethical company which includes working with the United Nations, in particular UNICEF. Popular with people all over the world, Hello Kitty was appointed child
ambassador by UNICEF USA in 1983. In 1994, UNICEF Japan made her their
goodwill envoy for children, and in 2004, on her 30th anniversary, Hello
Kitty was named UNICEF Special Friend of Children.
Sanrio always want to show their support for the girls and women who have made Hello Kitty the pop icon she is today, says marketing director Bill Hensley.
The other meaningful project for social is Hellosmile, a campaign to promote awareness and prevention of cervical cancer, an illness that continues to increase among young women. The project was launched in conjunction with the 'Human Conscious: Love Life, Join Hearts' campaign, started in 2005 by TOKYO FM (Japanese radio station).
